Nuku'alofa, Tonga:

The Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Police Hon. Dr. Viliami Tau Tangi officially opened the Tonga Police Commissioned Officers Annual Conference on Tuesday 17 November 2009.

Commissioned Officers from around the Kingdom have gathered at the Police Training School for a four day conference on "Leadership – Responsibility – Accountability".

During the conference the Prime Minister Hon. Dr Feleti Sevele will officially launch the Ministry of Police Strategic Plan.  This is a milestone for the Tonga Police and is a clear assurance to the people of the Kingdom of Tonga the direction of policing the Tonga Police is moving towards and that is Policing with confidence, the Tongan way.

The Strategic Plan has been developed over the last 12 months as a roadmap for the next four years.

The Police Commander says, "Service to the community, dedication to duty, and loyalty to our King and country are core values to which each police officer swears an oath. Our challenge is to ensure commitment to these values does not diminish, but increases with knowledge, experience and the support of a healthy Police organisation.

"It is on this foundation of policing values that I want to rebuild Tonga Police. I want Tongans to be assured that they are safe in their homes, on the roads and in their workplaces. I want police officers to be confident when responding, investigating and using intelligence. I want to see significant leaps forward in the development of Tonga Police, from investing in our staff through to replacing our fleet and overhauling our infrastructure.

"These are bold aims, but I am confident that with support from Government, our partners and the community, we will achieve them."

The launching of the Tonga Police Strategic Plan 2009-13 will be held at the Police Training School on Friday 20 November 2009 at 9:00 am. - Tonga Ministry of Police
