Modern Tonga: Free Society or failed social engineering experiment Salt Lake City, Utah: Mr. Amerika Samoa would agree, however, that Tongan politicians seemed uncommitted to the "free society" ideals of a democratic government. They seemed more interested in "social engineering." If their goals are to satisfy their own selfish agendas, and are not based on the "free society" foundation of a democratic system, "Modern Tonga" will be a failed social engineering experiment. - Sione Mokofisi. 02 Feb 2010, 12:05

My take on Tonga's elusive democracy Pago Pago, Amerika Samoa: The PRs have done the talking and it appears to be all air. Now, it is time to do the walking, and all we hear is the sound of heavy feet in retreat. Let's hear it PRs, "we came, we saw, and we now admit we don't know what the heck we were talking about". - Mafi o Amerika Samoa. 26 Jan 2010, 18:19

King George Tupou V's historical move Auckland, New Zealand: Whereas the declaration by George I at Pouono remains iconic, George V's willingness to come this far in his time on the throne may prove historically to be more significant. What we will do over the next twelve months or so will determine whether our generation is deserving of this or not. - Sefita Hao'uli. 15 Nov 2009, 05:49

The women's God-given right Salt Lake City, Utah, USA: Women's rights are an unconditional "God-given right" You don't give it to them, and you cannot take it away. All you're doing is deny them from their rights. - Sione Mokofisi. 08 Nov 2009, 20:22

Seeking democracy in undemocratic ways Pago Pago, Amerika Samoa: A city was burnt and lives lost to force a more democratic Tonga. A woman wants to force change by going on a hunger strike. A colleague wants to force change by encouraging women to boycott sex. I am concerned about the arrogance and hypocrisy. Democracy for a few, and seeking democracy in undemocratic methods. - Mafi 'o Amerika Samoa. 07 Nov 2009, 05:52

What happened to Democracy? New Zealand: I read with interest how Mele, the food technician, has gone on a fast because she wants the PM and Deputy PM to be replaced, right now, with one of three Nobles. I'm sorry Mele but Democracy means that I (not you) get to choose who I vote for. - Tevita Tapu. 22 Oct 2009, 19:11

Hunger strike or publicity stunt? Tonga: I can understand some logic in arguing about the Ashika disaster though irrelevant, but with domestic violence is just absurd. I think the women should rethink their approach. Should they be fasting and praying for a solution to put an end to domestic violence rather than pointing fingers? Or is this just a publicity stunt? - Samiu Sika. 20 Oct 2009, 22:15

CEDAW: The 'whys' and 'hows' of gender equality Atlanta, Georgia, USA: I think it is fair to say that Tongans are not fully aware of CEDAW and that vigorous communication and education measures should be undertaken on the "whys" and "hows" of the overarching goal of gender equality (what CEDAW is all about) so that every girl and woman will understand and appreciate gender equality, internalize these rights and claim their rights, and every boy and man will also understand women's equal rights, promote and protect these rights. - Amelia Kinahoi-Siamomua. 30 Sep 2009, 05:05
