Hiccups in the House
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: The Tongan Parliament is making itself irrelevant to the political reform process that it set for 2010, by failing to agree on the fundamentals for a new system of government for Tonga, and at the same time has left itself out of the decision-making process of the Constitutional and Electoral Reform Commission by not meeting the July 6 deadline for submissions. Editor's Comment.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga: Following the posting of my Editorial, Fresh new parliament needs fresh new members on February 23, there has been some aggressive flak from a People's Representative and reactions from political observers that attempt to distract from the points that were made. Editor's Comment.

Fresh new parliament needs fresh new members
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: As we are rushing to gather ideas to structure a new system of government, it is only wise for us to stop and have another critical look at what the Tongan parliament has forced on us to determine over a ridiculously short period of time. EDITOR'S COMMENT.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga: 'Public Participation' is a principle that the Tonga government appears to be striving to effect as we are trying to implement our economic and political reform programs. . . . The setback is an apparent reluctance by the Tongan people to participate in consultations in a meaningful and constructive way. Editor's Comment.

Commission for political reform, a ship adrift with not a soul aboard
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: Tonga's attempt at producing a new and more democratic form of government is a slog. When the Constitutional and Electoral Commission Act came into force on July 23, it was hailed as a milestone in Tonga's rush to have a new system of government by 2010. But since July the Commission has been a ship adrift without a sail or a rudder and not a soul aboard. Editor's Comment.

Tonga's Political Reform process lacks clear vision
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: Following the current discussions in the Tongan parliament about the exact role and the composition of Tonga's Commission for Political Reform, it is now glaringly obvious that parliament does not have a clear vision of the new system of government that they intend to impose on us. EDITOR'S COMMENT.
