TNWFC cancels Tsunami warning for Tonga
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: The Tsunami Warning in force for Tonga since 1.15 am today was cancelled by the Tonga National Weather Forecasting Centre TNWFC at 12.30 pm this afternoon, February 28. A small Tsunami Wave activity of 0.10m or 0.3ft was recorded at Nuku'alofa at 2024 UTC or 9:24 am local time on a gauge monitored by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

Tsunami warning remains
Nuku'alofa, Tonga:
A Tsunami Warning remains in force for Tonga, though its expected arrival time 8.40am has passed, and there is a sense of optimism that the tsunami may have weakened its power by the time it reaches Tonga.

Forecast 8:40 am Sunday tsunami wave activity for Tonga
Nuku'alofa, Tonga:
A tsunami wave moving across the Pacific this morning following an 8.8 earthquake in southern Chile is expected to reach Tonga's coastlines at 8:40 am Sunday 28 February but it is not known how high the wave will be. The Marquesas have recorded 1.79M (3.1ft) wave, and Papeete in Tahiti a 0.16m (six inches) wave. A tsunami warning is in effect for the whole of Tonga and the Pacific Islands.

A tsunami Warning is now in force for all of Tonga
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: Tsunami Warning Bulletin No. 5 issued from PTWC at 3:46am local time. 28 Fepueli 2009. A tsunami Warning is now in force for all of Tonga All persons in coastal and low lying areas all over Tonga are advised to pay special attention to A3Z radio/TV for directions and instructions. It is essential to take precautions now and wait for further notice while the tsunami warning centres are investigating the event to determine the level of danger.

Cyclone Rene batters Tongatapu
Nuku'alofa, Tonga:
Tropical Cyclone Rene swept into Tongatapu last night battering the capital and other areas of the island, with stinging horizontal rain and gusts reaching top speeds of 85 knots at 7:00 pm yesterday, leaving one ship on the reef and damaging trees, gardens and property, and power lines. Tonga battens down for big cyclone
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: A hurricane warning is now in force for the Vava’u group, as Severe Tropical Cyclone Rene, a Category 3 storm, is expected to bring destructive hurricane force winds with gusts up to 130 knots (240 km/h) around midnight tonight, with thunderstorms, phenomenal seas, and flooding; and may develop into a Category 4 force as it passes Ha'apai and Tongatapu on Monday.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Rene continues to intensify north east of Tonga this morning, with destructive winds close to its centre gusting to 130 knots, and moving South-southwest on a forecast track bringing it close to Vava'u, Ha'apai, and Tongatapu and 'Eua early on Monday.

6.3 undersea earthquake close to Tonga
Nuku'alofa, Tonga:
A magnitude 6.3 earthquake centred only 90 km SSE of Nuku'alofa was recorded at 3:34 pm today Saturday 13 February, but no damage has been reported.

Tropical cyclone alert for Tonga
Nuku'alofa, Tonga:
A tropical cyclone alert remains in force for Tonga. As Tropical Cyclone Rene intensifies to the Northeast of Tonga on its forecast track, the cyclone may bring damaging gale force winds over the whole Tonga group in the next 24 to 48 hours, during Sunday and Monday. A Special Weather Bulletin number three for Tonga on Tropical Cyclone Rene was issued from NWFC Fua'amotu at 4:00pm Saturday 13 February 2010.
