Political appointment comes with heavy responsibilities
Pago Pago, Amerika Samoa: Military personnel who have mastered the responsibilities of their current rank are considered for promotion to the next higher rank. However, one is either found qualified to assume the responsibilities of the next higher rank and is promoted or is found not fit for the next rank and he or she is processed out of the military.
Most of our PRs have been in parliament for years; more than enough time to learn and grow with their responsibilities. That does not appear to be the case. - Mafi 'o Amerika Samoa.

Democracy slipping away from Tongan parliament
Salt Lake City, Utah, USA: Members of Parliament are either oblivious to basic democratic political principles or are not visionary leaders with guts to make difficult decisions. Precious moments to complete a true democratic transformation of "Modern Tonga" are slipping away. - Sione A. Mokofisi.

Letters & Comments : Parliament
The Commission recommends no change
UK: The Commission recommends that the Assembly should have 26 members, 9 to be chosen by the nobles and 17 to be elected by the people. Well, no change there. The Commission recommended reducing the number of Cabinet members to 10. The Commission has completely forgotten that the 9 seats of the nobles will always be seen as part of the executive. I suggest that the 26 seats in Tongan Assembly should be elected by the Tongan electorate as a whole.

Tonga's land laws maximize land distribution
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: Tonga's land laws are not discriminating against women but should be viewed as the perfect way to maximize land distribution and use of a scarce commodity. - Daniel Fale.

CEDAW campaigner calls for Sex Strike
Salt Lake City, Utah, USA: Since Tongan men believe it is their "God-given right" to own land but women are denied the same right, what if women decided in unison to abstain from sex until the "hereditary tax allotment" law is changed? - Sione Mokofisi.

Tonga isolates itself by not ratifying CEDAW
'Anana, Ma'ufanga, Tonga: Tonga should always be seen to align itself with the international community at all times and where possible. We must remember that the world can do without Tonga, but Tonga cannot do without the world. Hence we must think globally, but act locally when making fundamental decisions of such magnitude that can come back to haunt us in future. - 'Ahongalu Fusimalohi.

The Tonga parliament thumbing down of CEDAW, a no brainer
Auckland, New Zealand: Giving CEDAW the thumbs down in parliament was a no brainer. We are largely a male-dominated conservative and religious country, devout in voice but not always in deed and clinging to the remnants of a culture that's made hypocrisy a virtue. Clearly we've got the wrong gender in the House. - Sefita Hao'uli.

Reality, parliament follows its agenda
New Zealand: Mr. Mokofisi please wake up and be realistic. The reality of what is actually happening in the world and in almost every House of Parliament is that they have their own Agenda, Guidelines and framework to follow whether we like it or not. That is why it is impossible for anyone to evaluate the debate or actions and expect to get the result that they like. - Viliami Tiseli.

Parliamentary buries Tongan women's plight
Utah, USA: This "Good Old Boys Club," ostensibly called the Tongan Parliament, treated the CEDAW like some kind of foreign disease that threatens Tongan culture and customs. They were more afraid of "same-sex marriage" than seeing Tongan women's status improved in a Constitution written 135 years ago. - Sione Mokofisi.

Letters & Comments : Parliament
Tonga parliament lacks accountability
USA: In my lowly opinion, authority, responsibility and accountability go hand in hand in a democratic experience. But so far, it seems our MPs do not want accountability. They come late to the parliamentary sessions, and they adjourn to avoid a schedule conflict with a church conference. Please pardon my ignorance. I did not realize wages of the honorable members of parliament are paid by the church. – TamaFoa.
