10 donors support Tonga'a renewable energy initiative
Nuku'alofa, Tonga:
In a quest to reduce Tonga's total reliance on imported fuel, the Tonga government this week took a positive step forward when 10 representatives of donor countries and agencies gave their support to an Interim Technical Report, which outlined the basis for a Tonga Energy Roadmap for the next decade.

Tonga puts renewable energy on the map
Neiafu, Vava'u, Tonga:
The Tonga government has set a target to supply 50% of Tonga's electricity generation from renewable sources within three years, according to an interim report presented to a Tonga Energy Roadmap Meeting in Vava'u this week.

Procurement Committee left in the dark over Ashika purchase
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: The Tonga Government Procurement Committee, whose primary job is to ensure Government is procuring goods at a reasonable price and of appropriate quality, was left in the dark when Cabinet made the decision to purchase the MV Princess Ashika ferry from Fiji in April earlier this year, the Ashika Inquiry was told on Friday.

Weather conditions normal for last Ashika sailing
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: There was nothing extraordinary about the weather conditions in the area where the MV Princess Ashika was sailing on its final voyage on August 5, 2009, and it was fairly normal conditions in Tonga, confirmed the Director of Meteorology for the Ministry of Transport 'Ofa Fa'anunu on November 13.

Commission pessimistic over ability of Assembly to meet 2010 election deadline
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: The eagerly awaited final report of Tonga's Constitutional and Electoral Commission released this week, contains some 80 recommendations on how to structure a new system of government for Tonga. While there are no surprises, the Commission does voice a concern over an apparent lack of understanding of its aims and the actual contents of its reports by some of the members of the House, who will be trusted with making the final decision on the new structure.

Tonga aims for 50% renewable energy in 3 years
Nuku'alofa, Tonga: The Prime Minister will host a historical meeting with Development Partners on Tonga's Energy Roadmap in Neiafu, Vava'u on 16-17 November 2009. The aim of the meeting is to finalise and sign-off on "Tonga's Energy Roadmap 2010-2020", which will enable Tonga to reach its policy target of fifty percent of its power generation to be fuelled by renewable sources within three years.

Tonga Luge team surprises experts
Nuku'alofa, Tonga:
In Luge, athletes could travel at a speed of up to 90 mph when riding down the track on their sled. Luge athletes must be fearless, and have high athleticism to be able to master the extreme centrifugal forces. Both requirements lie within the Tongan genes. The first test run by the Tongan Luge athletes surprised Luge experts, and the Luge Association of the Kingdom of Tonga is optimistic of a superb performance by the Tongan team.
